CHAPTER ELEVEN: The Confession to Rachel

 (Two Months Before the Wedding)

Rachel was waiting at the coffee shop when Maya arrived. Her expression shifted from curiosity to concern when she saw Maya's pale face, the dark circles under her eyes, the trembling in her hands.

"What's wrong?" Rachel asked immediately. "You look like you haven't slept in days. Are you sick? Is something wrong with the wedding?"

"I haven't slept," Maya admitted, sinking into the chair across from her. "I can't sleep. I can't eat. I can't think about anything except this. Rachel, I need to tell you something. And I need you to listen before you get angry. Please just hear me out."

Rachel's eyes narrowed. "Okay. I'm listening. Whatever it is, we'll figure it out."

Maya took a deep breath. "I know who you are. I know you were engaged to Leo Chen. And I know he broke your heart. I know about the fight. I know about the breakup. I know everything."

Rachel went very still. "How do you know that? How could you possibly know that? I never told you his name. I never told you any details."

"Because I'm his fiancée," Maya whispered. "I'm the woman he's marrying. And I found a video diary he made during your engagement. He recorded his feelings. His fears. His guilt. I watched all of it. I know everything. I know about the therapist. I know about the hotel room. I know what he said after you left."

Rachel stared at her for a long, frozen moment. Then she let out a slow breath.

"Wow," she said quietly. "That is... a lot. That is more than a lot. That's everything."

"I know. I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have lied to you. I shouldn't have pretended to be someone I'm not. But I was scared. I didn't know who he really was, and I thought if I met you, I'd find out the truth. I thought if I got to know you, I'd understand what happened. I'd understand why he couldn't be honest with me."

Rachel was silent for a moment. Then she said, "Did you? Did you find out the truth?"

"Did I what?"

"Find out what you were looking for. Did you figure out why he couldn't be honest?"

Maya nodded. "I found out that you didn't break his heart. You broke your own heart by leaving him. And he's been carrying that guilt ever since. He's been carrying it and hiding it and pretending it doesn't exist."

Rachel's eyes glistened. "He told you that? He actually told you that?"

"No. He didn't tell me anything. He never tells me anything. I found it in his video diary. He said you were right to leave. He said he wasn't ready. He said he didn't know if he'd ever be ready. He said he was broken and he didn't know if he could be fixed."

Rachel wiped her eyes. "I didn't know he felt that way. He never told me. He never told me anything. He just... shut down. And I got tired of trying to break through."

"That's the problem," Maya said. "He doesn't tell anyone anything. He hides. He pretends. And I'm tired of hiding too. I'm tired of pretending. I'm tired of being the only one who fights for this relationship."

Rachel reached across the table and took Maya's hand. "What are you going to do?"

"I don't know yet. But I'm going to tell him the truth. About the videos. About meeting you. About everything. I'm going to stop hiding and start fighting for myself."

Rachel squeezed her hand. "That takes courage. I didn't have that courage. I walked away instead of fighting. I was too tired, too hurt, too scared to keep trying."

"You made the right choice," Maya said softly. "You chose yourself. You chose your own sanity. That's not weakness. That's strength."

"And now it's your turn to choose yourself," Rachel said. "Whether that means staying or leaving—choose what's best for you. Not for him. Not for anyone else. For you. Because if you don't choose yourself, no one else will."

Maya nodded, tears spilling down her cheeks.

"Also," Rachel added, a small smile playing on her lips, "I'm hosting a gallery opening next Friday. A friend of mine is a painter. You should come. Bring a friend. I'll save you a glass of sparkling water. And if you want to bring Leo—" she shrugged—"I won't run away screaming. I promise. I think I'm finally ready to see him without falling apart."

Maya laughed through her tears. "I'll think about it. I really will."
