CHAPTER NINE: The Fourth Memory Card
(Three Months Before the Wedding)
Maya found
the fourth memory card by accident.
She was
cleaning the study—an act of penance for her lies, a way to feel like she was
earning back some moral ground—when she knocked over a stack of medical
journals. As she bent to pick them up, a small, unmarked memory card fell out
of one of them.
She stared
at it for a long time.
*You don't
have to watch it,* a voice whispered in her head. *You already know enough. You
already have enough reasons to leave or stay. Just leave it alone. Stop
digging. Stop torturing yourself.*
But she
couldn't.
She inserted
the card into the camera and pressed play.
The video
was dated **09.15.2019**—three weeks after the breakup. Leo looked terrible.
Hollow-eyed. Unshaven. He was sitting in the same hotel room, but the curtains
were drawn, and the lighting was dim and depressing.
*"I
think I'll always love Rachel,"* he said, his voice cracked and raw,
barely above a whisper. *"But she was right. I wasn't ready. I was too
scared to be honest. Too scared to let anyone see the real me. Too scared to be
vulnerable."*
He paused,
rubbing his eyes with both hands.
*"Maybe
I'll never be ready. Maybe I'm just one of those people who's better alone.
Maybe I'm broken in a way that can't be fixed. But God, I don't want to be
alone. I want to find someone who sees me—all of me—and stays anyway. But how
can anyone stay if I never show them who I really am?"*
He laughed
bitterly, a sound that was more pain than humor.
*"I'm a
surgeon. I fix things. I cut out the broken parts and replace them with new
ones. I save lives. But I can't fix myself. I can't save myself. And I don't
know if anyone else can either. Maybe I'm just too broken to be loved the way I
want to be loved."*
The video
ended.
Maya sat in
the dark study, tears streaming down her face.
She wasn't
crying for herself. She was crying for Leo—for the broken, frightened man
hiding behind his easy smile and his surgical confidence. She was crying
because she finally understood: he wasn't lying to her because he was cruel. He
was lying to her because he was terrified. Terrified that if she saw the real
him, she would leave.
Just like
Rachel had.
