Chapter 4: The Reckoning of Hearts

Chapter 4: The Reckoning of Hearts

The morning sun filtered through the curtains, casting warm streaks of light across the wooden floor. It had been a few weeks since Gorge returned to Ethan’s doorstep, his heart laden with guilt and gratitude. They had married in a small, intimate ceremony shortly after—nothing grand, just the two of them and a handful of close friends. Yet, beneath the surface of their newfound happiness, the shadows of the past lingered. Gorge carried wounds that hadn’t fully healed, and Ethan, though patient and kind, could sense that part of him still wrestled with his inner demons.

A New way

Ethan stretched her arms as she got out of bed, her hair tousled and her expression serene. She turned to see Gorge sitting by the window, staring out at the horizon. His face was calm, but his eyes betrayed the storm brewing within.

“Couldn’t sleep again?” she asked softly, walking over to him.

Gorge turned to her with a faint smile. “Just... thinking,” he replied. “About everything. About how far I’ve come. About you.”

She knelt beside him, her hands brushing over his. “You’ve been through so much, Gorge. But you’re here now. You’re safe. You’re loved.”

Gorge leaned forward, resting his forehead against hers. “I don’t deserve you, Ethan. I don’t deserve this life.”

“Don’t say that,” she whispered fiercely. “You fought your way out of the darkness. You chose to live. That’s what matters.”

But as much as Ethan’s words comforted him, Gorge couldn’t shake the ghosts of his past. The betrayal of his ex-fiancée, the despair that had driven him to the brink, and the burden of being saved when he thought he didn’t deserve it—all of it weighed heavily on his soul. He knew he had to confront these feelings if he ever wanted to find peace.

The Unexpected Visitor

Later that day, as Gorge and Ethan shared a quiet breakfast, their conversation was interrupted by a sharp knock at the door. Ethan glanced at Gorge, curious. “Were you expecting someone?”

Gorge shook his head. “No.”

Ethan stood and went to open the door. On the other side stood a woman Gorge hadn’t seen in over a year—a woman whose face he thought he’d never see again.

It was Liza, his ex-fiancée.

Gorge froze, his fork clattering onto his plate. Ethan turned back to him, her expression a mix of confusion and concern. “Gorge... do you know her?”

Liza stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, her eyes locking onto Gorge’s. She looked different—her once-pristine appearance was now disheveled, her makeup smudged, her eyes hollow.

“Gorge,” she said, her voice trembling. “I need to talk to you.”

The Confrontation

Gorge stood, his body tense. “What are you doing here, Liza?”

“I know I’m the last person you want to see,” she began, her voice quivering. “But I had to come. I had to explain.”

“Explain?” Gorge’s voice was sharp, laced with anger. “You think you can just show up after everything you did?”

Ethan stepped forward, placing a hand on Gorge’s arm. “Gorge, maybe you should hear her out.”

He turned to her, his jaw clenched. “Why? So she can justify betraying me? So she can tell me why she threw me away like I was nothing?”

Liza flinched at his words, tears welling up in her eyes. “I deserve that,” she said quietly. “I know I do. But please, Gorge, just give me a chance to explain.”

Reluctantly, Gorge gestured for Liza to sit. Ethan excused herself, giving them privacy, though she couldn’t help but feel a pang of unease.

Liza’s Story

“I made a terrible mistake,” Liza began, her voice breaking. “When I left you, I thought I was doing the right thing. I thought... I thought I was chasing a better life. But I was wrong.”

Gorge crossed his arms, his expression cold. “You didn’t just leave me, Liza. You destroyed me. You married someone else without even telling me why.”

Liza wiped her tears, her hands shaking. “It wasn’t about you, Gorge. It was about me. I was scared. I thought I needed stability, security. And I thought... he could give me that.”

“And could he?” Gorge asked bitterly.

Liza shook her head. “No. The life I chose was a lie. He wasn’t the man I thought he was. He hurt me, Gorge. In ways I can’t even begin to describe.”

For a moment, Gorge’s anger wavered, replaced by a flicker of pity. But he quickly pushed it aside. “So now you’re here. What do you want from me, Liza? Forgiveness? Closure?”

“I don’t know,” she admitted. “Maybe both. Maybe I just needed to see you—to tell you that I’m sorry. Truly, deeply sorry.”

Gorge sighed, running a hand through his hair. “You have no idea what you put me through. I nearly ended my life because of you. If it weren’t for Ethan...” His voice trailed off, and he looked away, his emotions threatening to overwhelm him.

Liza’s eyes widened. “Gorge, I— I didn’t know. I never wanted that for you. I swear.”

“Well, it happened,” he said bluntly. “And now I’m trying to move on.”

The Turning Point

As Liza stood to leave, she hesitated, her eyes pleading. “I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness, Gorge. But I hope, someday, you can find it in your heart to let go of the pain I caused you.”

Gorge didn’t respond. He simply watched as Liza walked out the door, her figure disappearing into the distance.

When Ethan returned to the room, she found Gorge sitting on the couch, his head in his hands. She sat beside him, her presence a quiet comfort.

“Are you okay?” she asked gently.

“I don’t know,” he admitted. “Seeing her again... it brought everything back. The pain, the anger, the betrayal. But also... the love I used to feel for her.”

Ethan’s heart clenched, but she didn’t let it show. “It’s okay to feel conflicted, Gorge. You’re human. But remember this—you’re not the same person you were back then. You’ve grown. You’ve healed. And you have a new life now.”

He looked at her, his eyes filled with gratitude. “You’re right. I do. And I’m not going to let the past take that away from me.”

A New Threat

Just as Gorge and Ethan began to find their footing again, another challenge loomed on the horizon. One evening, as they walked through the park, a shadowy figure emerged from the trees, blocking their path.

“Gorge Carter,” the man said, his voice low and menacing.

Gorge instinctively stepped in front of Ethan, shielding her. “Who are you? What do you want?”

The man smirked. “Let’s just say I’m someone who’s been keeping an eye on you. And I have a message for you—stay out of things that don’t concern you.”

Gorge frowned, confused. “What are you talking about?”

“You’ll find out soon enough,” the man said cryptically. “Just remember—some doors are better left closed.”

Before Gorge could respond, the man disappeared into the shadows, leaving him and Ethan shaken.

The Mystery Deepens

Over the next few days, Gorge couldn’t shake the encounter with the stranger. Who was he? What did he mean? And why did he seem to know so much about Gorge?

As he pondered these questions, he began to notice strange things happening around him—anonymous letters left at his door, unfamiliar faces watching him from a distance, and a growing sense of unease that he couldn’t explain.

Ethan tried to reassure him, but even she couldn’t deny that something felt off. “Maybe it’s just a coincidence,” she suggested. “Or maybe it’s someone playing a prank.”

Gorge shook his head. “No. This feels... deliberate. Like someone is trying to send me a message.”

But what that message was, he had no idea.

The Revelation

One night, as Gorge sat alone in his study, poring over the mysterious letters, a realization struck him. The handwriting, the phrasing—it all felt eerily familiar.

With a sinking feeling, he reached for his phone and called Ethan into the room. “Ethan,” he said, his voice trembling. “I think... I think it’s Liza.”

Ethan’s eyes widened. “Liza? But why would she—”

“I don’t know,” he interrupted. “But the way these letters are written... it’s just like the notes she used to leave me when we were together.”

Ethan frowned, her mind racing. “If it is her, what does she want? And why is she doing this?”

Gorge shook his head, his frustration mounting

“I don’t know. But I’m going to find out.”
